Fine dust sticker

  • General information

Since March 1, 2007, municipalities and cities have been able to impose traffic bans to improve air quality in zones with a particularly high risk of particulate matter, such as city centers, some federal highways or traffic junctions.

The areas with a particularly high risk of particulate matter are identified by the traffic sign "Umweltzone" (Low Emission Zone). Below the sign, an additional sign displays the environmental badges with which a vehicle must be marked in order to be allowed to drive through this area. Vehicles without an environmental sticker are not allowed to drive through an environmental zone.
The marking of a motor vehicle with a fine dust sticker is based on a voluntary basis. However, vehicles are not allowed to drive through an environmental zone even if they meet the requirements for being issued with the necessary environmental sticker.

Not affected by the traffic bans are:

    • mobile machinery and equipment
    • working machines
    • agricultural and forestry tractors,
    • mopeds, light motorcycles, motorcycles, motor scooters and three-wheeled motor vehicles,
    • ambulances, medical vehicles with appropriate marking in use for medical care of the population,
    • motor vehicles for persons who are exceptionally severely disabled and have the mark "aG", "H" or "Bl" in their severely disabled person's card.
Since 01.03.2007, low-emission vehicles (based on their emission key) can be identified by corresponding stickers (fine dust sticker).

The sticker color assigned to a motor vehicle is determined by the respective pollutant emission class and any retrofitted particulate reduction system.

In the registration certificate Part I, you will find the key number in the 3rd and 4th position of the 4-digit code in field 14.1.

In the old vehicle registration certificate, the key number is located in the 5th and 6th position of the 6-digit key number in field 1.

You can find out the sticker color for your vehicle on the TÜV-Nord website.
