General information
Sweeping the stairs
Sweeping the stairs in front of the town hall is also a popular custom in Wolfsburg, where unmarried men are obliged to clean the stairs of a public building (preferably the town hall stairs) on their 30th birthday. The custom originally comes from Bremen and has its origins there with the so-called cathedral stair sweeping.
Cleaning door handles
Single ladies are required to "clean door handles" on their 30th birthday. Unfortunately, this ritual is not possible in order to protect the town hall door, which is worth preserving.
As an alternative, we recommend mounting one or more handles on a separate board or door, which can then be cleaned in front of the town hall.

Deadlines
The sweeping of stairs and cleaning of door handles in front of the town hall should be registered by telephone or e-mail a week in advance if possible.
If there are no other appointments to the contrary, sweeping or cleaning on the town hall steps is possible. In exceptional cases, there are alternative options at the fountain area.

Other notes
All materials used (crown caps, wood shavings, sand, etc.) must be completely removed after the event.
Please do not use paper, metal confetti or polystyrene of any kind, as the materials are easily carried around by the wind and thus contaminate the surroundings. It is not possible to completely sweep up these materials.
