In Wolfsburg, you have a variety of options for having your child cared for.
In today's world, the compatibility of family and career is the basis for the future of a city. Wolfsburg recognized childcare and early childhood education years ago as an important core issue for Germany's dynamic economic region.
Wolfsburg families have the choice between various childcare options of equal value: The crèche, the (multi-age) kindergarten or the family nest and extended family nest (child day care) in Wolfsburg - all four are of a high quality standard of care and have their own concepts in which pedagogical focuses are worked out.
Wolfsburg's outstanding educational standard is made up of many building blocks - three specialists per crèche group and multi-age kindergarten group, flexible solutions in family nests, the continuous training and further education of specialists and an intensive program for the further training, retention and promotion of childcare staff.
Wolfsburg is gearing up - for the future of our children!

Childcare for children from 0 to under 3 years
For children under the age of three, you have a choice of four equivalent childcare options, from which you can choose according to your child's current situation and preferences.
Crèche
The best-known offer is the crèche, where up to 15 children aged 0 to 3 years are looked after by three specialist staff during fixed opening hours. The crèches have different educational focuses, for example creative design, sport, music or scientific experiences.
Kindergarten for all ages
In the multi-age kindergarten, children from 0 to 6 years are looked after by two specialist staff during fixed opening hours. The kindergarten groups also have different educational focuses (see crèche). The multi-age kindergarten groups differ from the normal kindergarten groups in that they have a wider age range. Here, children from 0 to 6 years are cared for together, which benefits both the older and younger children: The younger children learn from the older ones. In turn, they gain self-confidence and deepen their own knowledge by playing with the younger children. Another advantage: the child can stay in the same group for many years and build up long-term friendships.
FAMILIENNEST (child day care)
Child day care is a family-based care option in which a maximum of five children are looked after by a qualified child day care worker with a care license. In Wolfsburg, this form of care is known as a family nest.
The care takes place in the home of the childminder, the parents/guardians of the child or in other suitable rooms. The family setting, the low care ratio and the personal assignment to a consistent caregiver characterize child day care as a particularly suitable form of care for very young children. The individual care needs of children and parents can be taken into account. For older children (up to the age of 14), childcare by a childminder can also be an option as a supplementary service if the childcare hours of the daycare center or school are not sufficient - perhaps even overnight care is needed. You can find more information on child day care here.

Childcare for children from the age of 3 until they start school
For children over the age of three, you also have the choice between several equivalent childcare options, from which you can choose according to your child's current situation and preferences.
Kindergarten
In the kindergarten, children aged 3 to 6 are looked after by two specialist staff during fixed opening hours. The kindergarten groups have different concepts and educational focuses, such as creative design, sport, music or scientific experiences, etc.

The care takes place in the home of the childminder, the parents/guardians of the child or in other suitable rooms. The family setting, the favorable care ratio and the personal assignment to a consistent caregiver characterize child day care as a particularly suitable form of care for the very young. This offer is therefore primarily for children aged 0-3 years. However, childcare by a childminder can also be an option for older children (up to the age of 14) as a supplementary service if the childcare hours of the daycare center or school are not sufficient - perhaps even overnight care is required or the individual care needs of the child require care in a small family setting. Further information on child day care can be found here. -

What criteria are used to allocate the childcare places?
The crèche/kindergarten year always starts on August 1st of each year. Most places are therefore available and allocated at this time due to kindergarten children starting school. Further allocation deadlines refer to the childcare places that are still available or become available in the course of the kindergarten year. Places are allocated in accordance with the allocation criteria, taking into account the parents' wishes.
The allocation criteria are special cases of hardship, single parent and working, studying or training, both parents/guardians are working, studying or training, parent/guardian is/are in an educational program or on an integration course, sibling(s) in the facility, parents' priorities and provider-specific criteria (e.g. place of residence).
In addition to the parents' expressed wishes, the legal requirements for group constellations play a decisive role. Within these legal guidelines, various criteria must be taken into account to ensure a balanced group structure. These include the gender ratio.
The allocation of childcare places is carried out decentrally by the respective daycare center management according to the allocation criteria, taking into account the parents' wishes. All criteria are derived from the legal requirements of SGB VIII.

How much does childcare cost in Wolfsburg?
The cost contribution (parental contribution for childcare, breakfast/lunch and special services) for attending a daycare center or child daycare depends on the age of the child.
For children under 3 years of age:
A standard monthly fee is charged for the child's care, which is based on the type of care (crèche, kindergarten) and the form of care (half-day, three-quarter day, full-day) in accordance with the applicable fee table.
Special services used and breakfast, break and lunch meals are also subject to contributions. The standard contribution is charged for the use of special services. The standard contribution to be paid is based on the number of special services according to the applicable parental contribution table.
For children over 3 years of age:
No parental contribution is charged for childcare of up to 8 hours a day including special services (early and late care). The prerequisite for this is that your usual place of residence is within Lower Saxony.
Agreed special services that exceed 8 hours and breakfast, break and lunch meals are subject to contributions. The standard contribution is charged for the use of special services. The standard contribution to be paid is based on the number of special services according to the applicable parental contribution table. -
Reduction/waiver of the cost contribution
If you receive a social benefit (basic security benefits for jobseekers (ALG II), assistance with living expenses / social welfare, housing benefit, child allowance under the Federal Child Benefit Act, benefits under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act) or have a low income (< 21,100 euros adjusted annual income = annual gross income minus income-related expenses of 1.230.00 per working parent, minus a flat-rate deduction of 19% or 24% for taxes/social security contributions, minus a child allowance of €2,556.00 per child, minus any maintenance payments), you have the option of applying for a waiver of the standard contribution for childcare, breakfast and the standard contribution for special services. Lunchtime meals are excluded from this and can only be waived on presentation of the education card, see below for more information.
In addition to the waiver, an income-dependent reduction of the regular contribution for childcare and special services is also possible if you have an income of less than 100,000.00 euros adjusted net per year.
In both cases, an application for a reduction/waiver of the cost contribution must be completed in full and submitted to the Youth Division in good time before the service is used, together with all relevant proof of income.
-
Waiver of the contribution for lunchtime meals
If you receive a social benefit, you will usually also receive an education card from your benefit-granting agency when you first receive your social benefit. The education card allows you to receive a waiver for lunchtime meals when attending a daycare center. Please submit your education card to the provider of your daycare center if a waiver is desired.

Parent contribution tables
On 17.05.2023, the Wolfsburg City Council revised the parental contribution tables for attending a Wolfsburg daycare center or daycare center and for the care of children from outside the municipality from 01.08.2023. The current tables can be found in the parental contribution table.
A little tip:
Parental contributions paid can be deducted from your income tax return, reducing the family's tax burden.
-
Where can I apply for a reduction/waiver of the cost contribution?
You will receive the necessary forms (information on the parental contribution, application for a reduction and the parental contribution table) from the respective daycare center after signing the childcare contract.

Support concept language education
Since 2015, the city of Wolfsburg has been pursuing the goal of strengthening children's language skills with the "language education support concept". The focus is on language education integrated into everyday life for all children in facilities, the sharpening of one's own professional attitude and support from external language education facilitators. This training format is a novelty in the field of early childhood education and is absolutely unique in the state.

Lunchtime catering
The use of lunchtime meals must be registered with the kindergarten management. The full meal rate must be paid for meals. This can vary from provider to provider.
A reduction in the cost of meals is possible for Wolfsburg families who receive social benefits. As a rule, they receive a voucher for education and participation (BuT voucher) from the social benefits provider. This voucher must be submitted to the respective daycare provider so that the meals can be reduced to EUR 0.00.
