The city of Wolfsburg owns around 950 hectares of forest. A large part of this was transferred to the city by the state in the 1950s as an "urban development area". The foresters of the state, now the Niedersächsische Landesforsten, have looked after the city forest ever since.
On the following pages, you can find out more about the urban forest as a home for plants and animals, its use as a recreational area, its maintenance and other interesting facts.

Wolfsburg is one of the greenest cities in Germany. The decisive factor here is urban planning, which has meanderingly fitted the city into the landscape structures. Forests, public green spaces and built-up areas thus dovetail very closely with one another.

Forest has time! Many trees stand in their place for 180, 200 or even more years. When we walk under their canopy and take many a path day in and day out, we don't really notice how the forest changes. - Recreation, sports and relaxation

As a matter of principle, periodic economic plans are drawn up for forest management - as was the case for the urban forest in 2006. This 10-year forest management plan, prepared by the State Forests and approved by the Council, acknowledges the measures taken in the past, evaluates the current state of the forest, and sets out the principles of future management based on the city's specifications.
