Pioneering cultural buildings
Founded in 1938, Wolfsburg is one of the very few new cities of the 20th century. Founded on July 1, 1938, the city was often a pioneer of urban development trends in the young Federal Republic of Germany during its short and exciting history. The city is a characteristic example of planned urban development, closely linked in its history to the economic developments of the automobile group. Wolfsburg can therefore almost be regarded as a museum of 20th century urban development ideas and at the same time combines a large number of exciting individual buildings.
Since the mid-1950s, Alvar Aalto's Kulturhaus, Hans Scharoun's theater building, the art museum and the Autostadt have been built along the central city axis. Up until the phæno, a groundbreaking cultural project was realized here practically every ten years, providing impetus as a pioneering development.
Communicating architecture in Wolfsburg
The fact that urban development and architecture follow special parameters in the "new" city of Wolfsburg and now have a decisive influence on the city's public image has been taken into account by the city of Wolfsburg by creating a separate department on July 1, 2001 for the topic of architecture communication and architecture mediation: the Forum Architektur. The aim of the institution is, on the one hand, to consciously raise Wolfsburg's profile as a city of architecture and, on the other hand, to do basic work on architectural culture for the residents of this city.
