Replace motor vehicle license plates due to illegibility or damage

  • General information

    If your vehicle's license plates are damaged (e.g. due to an accident), have become illegible over time, or if a sticker (stamp sticker or inspection sticker) has become detached from the license plate, a new sticker must be applied to the previous license plate(s) or to the new license plate(s).

    Also, at the request of the owner of a motorcycle, the previous license plate may be exchanged for the new motorcycle license plate.

    Important Notice:
    In the event of loss or theft of one or both license plates, it is always necessary to re-register the vehicle and block the lost license plate. Please book an appointment using the service -. Re-registration

  • Required documents

    • Identity card or passport with registration certificate
    • Vehicle registration document / registration certificate part I
    • Proof of a valid general inspection according to § 29 StVZO. HU inspection report; the submission of the inspection report on the last main inspection is only required if the due date of the next HU is not evident from the vehicle registration certificate / ZBI.
    • Old license plate(s) - even if only one plate is replaced on a passenger car, both old plates must always be submitted.

    If applicable, additionally required at the time of application:

    by proxy / representative*:
    • issued power of attorney (form see below) including personal document of the authorizer and of the authorized representative
    for companies (GmbH, AG, OHG, KG, UG haftungsbeschränkt, foreign legal form):
    • Current excerpt from the commercial register, current business registration, power of attorney of the managing director or authorized signatory or personal appearance of the managing director/authorized signatory and their identity card/passport.
    for associations:
    • Excerpt from the register of associations; identity card or passport and power of attorney of the appointed representative(s).
    for freelancers:
    • Proof of membership in a chamber (e.g. medical association, chamber of notaries, veterinary association, etc.) or
    • certificate from the tax office

    for companies under civil law:

    • Complete overview of the partners (as a rule, partnership agreement)
    • Power of attorney and declaration of the person to whom the registration is to be made (confirmed by signature of all partners) as well as the identity card / passport of the partner to whom the registration is to be made.
    For minors:

  • Fees

    Fees are charged in accordance with the German Fee Regulations for Road Traffic Measures (GebOSt). The specific fee amount can only be determined on site based on the submission of the complete documents.

    In the example, the following fees are charged:

    • Sealing of one license plate: 4.40 EUR (front) or 4.90 EUR (rear)
    • Sealing of two plates: 6,10 EUR
    ATTENTION: The fee applies only to the re-sealing of one/two damaged or illegible license plate(s), not to the re-labeling due to theft/loss.

    Additional costs for the creation of license plates are not included and will not be charged by the vehicle registration authority.
