Ehmen history

Year Events
942

First documented mention of Ehmen together with Fallersleben in a document by Emperor Otto I.

In the following centuries, the town experienced changing rulerships and fell to the House of Lüneburg in 1428, which was absorbed into the Electorate of Hanover in 1705 and became Prussian in 1866.

1898

The former farming village develops into an industrial location through the mining of potash salt, in which potash salt is extracted and processed in chemical factories.

The village experiences an increase in the number of working people and their families, which results in a change in infrastructure and major construction activity

1917

a mining accident claims 31 lives

1925

the mine is closed down due to unprofitability and all workers are made redundant.

1938

Industrial resettlement through the Luftwaffe tank farm, which is largely destroyed by bombing raids at the beginning of 1945 and later demolished. A new settlement area is created there (Birkengehege)

The new "town of the KDF car near Fallersleben" and the Volkswagen factory are founded nearby.

1972

the previously independent village of Ehmen in the district of Gifhorn is incorporated into the town of Wolfsburg as a district.

Today

the village is home to around 5,700 inhabitants. Ehmen gained many new residents from 2005 onwards with the realization of the "Kerksiek" development area. It is one of the largest single-family house development areas in northern Germany.

The infrastructure with an elementary school, kindergarten, retirement home and good amenities caters for all generations.

Ehmen is also an interesting local recreation area due to its immediate location next to Hohenstedter Holz (landscape conservation area and nature reserve) with the Mühlenriede .

IVEV

Many local clubs are organized in the IVEV = Interessenverband Ehmener Vereine - an association of Ehmen clubs - and work together to cultivate customs and cultural activities.

Many of the heritage preservation activities are currently connected with the shaft renovation (100 years of the Einigkeit I potash shaft)
