The history of the village of Neuhaus

The village of Neuhaus owes its emergence as a political municipality in 1935 to the decline of the domain, the property of the sovereign mentioned since 1423.
As it became increasingly uneconomical to lease the state estate, it ceased to be run and was relocated. As a result, 11 families of farmers and 2 families of craftsmen from various parts of the Braunschweig region came to the historic site of the castle built in 1372 and founded the village community of Neuhaus in 1936. Day laborer families from the domain who stayed in Neuhaus found work on the new farms and with mutual help, things picked up quickly.

From the divided up domain land, 13 so-called "hereditary farms" were created, with landholdings of between 18 and 50 hectares, which were sold to the new settlers on favorable terms. When building the new farmsteads, great importance was attached to a cohesive, uniform townscape. In keeping with existing buildings on the estate, half-timbered construction was preferred for new buildings.
At the time the village was founded, around 95 inhabitants lived here.

The castle itself was converted into the "Reichsschule für Leibesübungen des Reichsnährstandes Burg Neuhaus". The farm buildings were converted into living quarters, dormitories and classrooms, sanitary facilities, utilities and a gymnasium, ideal conditions for 80 male and female youths from the entire German farming community. This facility was closed at the beginning of the war in 1939.

After the Second World War, 35 orphans who had been expelled from their East German homeland were accommodated in Neuhaus Castle in 1947, which at the time belonged to the district of Helmstedt. The children found ideal conditions at the Neuhaus residential school, which had a therapeutic effect on them.
Following the example of the SOS Children's Villages, the "castle children", whose number quickly increased to 70, were accommodated in four family groups, each with their own rooms and a teacher. As a special educational feature, the pupils were taught according to the "Jena Plan", a reformed educational concept that enabled the children to act in a liberal, democratic and self-discovering way: "education through education".
The home school was closed in 1980.

In 1950, Neuhaus was still a small farming village with 337 inhabitants. However, the building boom of the 1950s and 1960s soon reached Neuhaus.
Farmers sold their meadows and farmland and the new development areas "Alexanderberg", "Försterberg", "Raumeholz" and "Am Seeteich" were created.
The number of inhabitants rose to 756 in 1971 due to the further development of "Burgallee" and "Am Steinkopf".
In 1972, Neuhaus was incorporated into the town of Wolfsburg from the district of Helmstedt as part of the territorial reform.
The desire for more building land in Neuhaus soon grew. The "Seeteich I" area was created in 1987. Smaller plots of land were also built on as part of this project.

The demand for building plots in Neuhaus was enormous. Consequently, the decision was made to release "Seeteich II". The population rose to 1707 inhabitants (end of 2009). Due to the strong growth, the two-grade elementary school was expanded to a four-grade school in 1994. (Branch of the "Käferschule" in Reislingen).
