129,000 Wolfsburg residents by 2035

Latest forecast shows slight increase in population

The city of Wolfsburg has published its latest population forecast up to 2035. It shows that Wolfsburg will remain stable - with slight growth to around 129,000 people and clear prospects for all generations. The forecast is a key planning tool for urban development.

Mike King

"The current population forecast is a key tool for shaping the future of our city. It shows us where we as the city of Wolfsburg need to focus in order to continue to be a liveable home for all generations," explains Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann. "Investment in the housing market, whether in existing or new buildings, is a fundamental prerequisite for keeping Wolfsburg's population stable. A second important factor is the development of the business location. With the 10-point plan, the designation of new business parks and numerous measures for Wolfsburg's city center, we are also on the right track here."

Together for a city worth living in

As the city of Wolfsburg, we use the new population forecast as a strategic management tool. It shows us where we need to take action - be it in housing construction, education planning or the development of our city center.

Changing age structure

The forecast not only sheds light on the total number of inhabitants, but also on the age structure:

  • More young adults: 8.6% among 15 to under 35-year-olds
  • Decline among the youngest: -7.0% among 0 to under 6-year-olds
  • Significant increase in the 65 to under 80 age group: 13.9 %
  • Decline among the very old: -14.6 %, with a slight trend reversal towards the end of the period

"It is our task to make Wolfsburg attractive for all age groups. The forecast helps us to plan the necessary social infrastructure in line with demand," adds Marcel Hilbig, Head of the Data, Strategies and Urban Development Department. "The situation in schools will remain tense and will only ease somewhat towards the end of the forecast period, when this generation enters training or goes to university. It will be crucial for Wolfsburg's future to offer this generation prospects and keep them here. They are the parents of the day after tomorrow."

Forecast as a dynamic tool

These developments help us to plan the social infrastructure with foresight - from daycare centers and schools to facilities for the elderly. The population forecast is reviewed and adjusted annually. This allows us to react flexibly to new developments - and make Wolfsburg fit for the future together. The complete forecast can be viewed in the Wolfsburg online municipal statistics (WOKS).
