Oak processionary moth

Global warming favors the proliferation of heat-loving insects. For example, the oak processionary moth (EPS) continues to spread in Germany. Only oak trees are affected. The EPS loves warmth and prefers free-standing and sunlit individual trees. The caterpillars hatch in May and hide in the nests during the day. In the evening, they move in procession from the nest to the treetop and eat the leaves.
To protect yourself, the city of Wolfsburg advises you to wear clothing that covers your body if you are sensitive, to avoid infested oak trees if possible and to avoid touching caterpillars and their nests. In case of severe itching after touching, plenty of cold water will help. In particularly serious cases, a doctor or emergency services should be called. Clothes with caterpillar hairs on them should be washed at a temperature of at least 60 degrees.
