Official certifications

  • General information

    There are basically two different types of certification

    1. the official certification of copies, duplicates and photocopies, respectively
    2. the official certification of signatures

    Documents are officially certified by us if
    • the original was produced by the City of Wolfsburg itself
    • the original was produced by another German authority
    • the copy is required for submission to a German authority

    The following documents are not officially certified by us

    • Civil status documents
    • Driving licenses
    • Weapons possession cards
    • Hunting licenses
    • Fishing licenses
    • Foreign documents (if no translation by a sworn interpreter can be provided)
    • Certificates of good conduct
    • Extracts from the trade register
    • Extracts from the commercial register
    • Excerpts from the real estate cadastre
    • Articles of association of joint stock companies and limited liability companies
    • Signatures on health care and patient powers of attorney
    • Foreign identity documents
    • Court decisions
    • Land register entries
    • Wills
    • Guardian cards, certificates of appointment as guardian
    • Extracts from the register of associations
    • Registration certificates part II part I
    • Development plans
    • Purchase contracts, donation contracts, etc.
    • Invitations from relatives and friends from abroad
    • Declarations of consent of legal guardians for taking children abroad (notary)

    Signatures or hand signs are notarized unless they are executed in the presence of or acknowledged by the certifying officer.

    The certification will be refused if
    • the signed document is neither intended for submission to a public authority nor to any other body to which the signed document must be submitted under a legal regulation
    • signatures require public certification (the responsibility of notaries and courts)
    • the document to be certified is not in German and the required official translation is not provided
    • the certification of signatures is requested without the accompanying text
    • the content of the document submitted is obviously illegal, untruthful, indecent or illegible or the verification is refused

  • Required documents

    Official certification of a copy:

    • the original document

    Official certification of a signature:

    • the identity card/passport
    • the document on which the signature is to be officially certified

  • Fees

    Official certification of a copy:

    • 5.50 Euro per page for certifications on existing copies*
    • 3.50 euros per page for certifications on copies made by us*

    *The difference in fees is explained by the fact that an existing copy must be compared word for word, character for character, with the original. A copy made by us can be certified immediately without further verification.

    • 3.50 Euro Notarization of certificates
    • 3.00 Euro Notarization of certificates for pupils, students and trainees

    Official certification of a signature: 5.50 euros

    Official certifications for pension purposes are free of charge.

  • Special features

    The following documents are not officially notarized by the Citizens' Services:

    • Extracts from the commercial register ( local courts are responsible)
    • Extracts from the land register (the land registry office is responsible)
    • Extracts from the register of associations(local court/register of associations)
    • Foreign identity documents (consulates or other state authorities are responsible)
    • Employment references (company, employer)
    • Appointment certificates for caregivers, caregiver certificates(local court)
    • Development plans(land registry office, building inspectorate)
    • Invitations from relatives or friends from abroad (please contact the Immigration Office)
    • Certificates of good conduct (the Federal Central Criminal Register is responsible)
    • Driving licenses(driving license office)
    • Articles of association of public limited companies and limited liability companies (notaries are responsible)
    • Court decisions (the courts are responsible)
    • Land register entries (the local courts are responsible)
    • Extracts from the trade register(Federal Office of Justice)
    • Civil status certificates (birth, marriage and death certificates must be applied for at the registry office )
    • Documents under private law (e.g. purchase agreements, gift agreements, loan agreements, etc.)
    • Wills (notary)
    • Health care proxies (responsible is the care office in the health department)
    • Registration certificate I II (only original documents must be submitted to the authorities)
