The history of the village of Sülfeld

In his chronicle, Thietmar of Merseburg reports a miracle that took place in Silivellun (Sülfeld) in the second week of December 1017 (Chronicle VII, 68). This is the first known mention of the village of Sülfeld near Fallersleben. Sülfeld was first mentioned in a document in 1339 as the manor of Sulefelde, and the village's St. Mark's Church was already mentioned in 1318. The village was named again in 1360 when Duke Magnus of Brunswick-Lüneburg bequeathed part of the village to the Cistercian monastery of Riddagshausen near Brunswick. The clustered village of Sülfeld developed to the north of the church and by 1489 already had 21 dwellings. An estate located in the southern part of the village was dissolved in the 19th century as part of the land consolidation process. The population of 564 in 1939 doubled as a result of the influx of war refugees after the Second World War. Due to the jobs offered by the nearby Volkswagen factory, the population rose to over 3000 today.

On July 1, 1972, Sülfeld, which originated from the district of Gifhorn, was incorporated into the city of Wolfsburg in accordance with the Wolfsburg Act.

Sülfeld is the westernmost district of Wolfsburg, located in the valley of the Mühlenriede stream. The Sülfeld lock, which was built in 1938 and is the only lock on the Mittelland Canal between Hanover and Magdeburg, is located close to the town. The district includes the lock settlement, which lies outside the built-up area. It was created in the 1930s with the construction of twelve residential buildings for lock workers.

Politics

Together with the Fallersleben district, Sülfeld forms the village of Fallersleben-Sülfeld, which is represented by a local council. The local mayor is André-Georg Schlichting (CDU).

Buildings

  • St. Mark's Church from 1313 - Evangelical-Lutheran
  • Sülfeld lock of the Mittelland Canal from 1938. The south chamber was rebuilt in 2007
  • The estate with the production facility and sales rooms for Sülfeld grain

Green spaces and local recreation

The 125-hectare Ilkerbruch nature reserve is located in the north of the Sülfeld district, directly on the district road 114. The area with its large expanses of water is particularly important for bird conservation and has been a nature reserve since 1989. The large expanses of water, surrounded by grassland, provide breeding and resting places for marsupial tits, snipes, white-tailed eagles, cranes, kingfishers and duck species such as pintails and shovelers. About 1 km further north is the Barnbruch wetland and nature reserve. The Tankumsee lake in neighboring Isenbüttel, which was created during the construction of the Elbe side canal, is used for local recreation and is part of the catchment area. The Fallersleben outdoor pool is located in the wider catchment area.
To the west of Sülfeld is the Aueteich, which the Mühlenriede flows through from Ehmen. The Aueteich is a flood retention basin with a reservoir.
