Important signal set

European flags hoisted on the town hall square

Mayor Dennis Weilmann, Mayor Angelika Jahns and Mayor Andreas Klaffehn raised the European flag on the town hall square together with other political representatives. It shows a circle of twelve golden stars on a blue background - a symbol of unity, solidarity and harmony in Europe.

"The European flag is much more than a symbol of the European Union - it stands for cohesion, peace and the common identity of our continent. Especially at a time when global partnerships are shifting and Ukraine continues to suffer from Russia's aggression, we are using it as a visible sign of a united and strong Europe," emphasized Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann.

Raising the European flag is a tradition in Wolfsburg. The city has already been awarded the European Diploma (2016) and the Council of Europe's Flag of Honor (2017) for its commitment. Several Wolfsburg schools - including the Ratsgymnasium and the Leonardo da Vinci comprehensive school - bear the title of European School and teach in-depth knowledge about Europe.

The EU flag itself was introduced by the Council of Europe in 1955 and adopted by the EU heads of state and government in 1985 as the official symbol of the future European Union. It celebrates its 70th anniversary in 2025.
