Wolfsburg honors its sporting greats

Athletes of the year honored

A great evening for Wolfsburg sport: on Friday evening, the outstanding sporting achievements of 2024 were celebrated in the festive ambience of the Gartensaal in the castle. Together with representatives of Wolfsburg sport, Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann honored athletes who have represented our city with impressive successes throughout the year on the regional, national and international stage.

The focus of the event was the awarding of the Sportswoman, Sportsman and Team of the Year. The following were honored:

Nele Jaworski (athletics, VfL Wolfsburg e. V.) was German U23 champion over 100 and 200 meters as well as multiple state and North German indoor champion. On the international stage, she achieved two fourth places with the 4x100-meter relay team at the European Championships in Rome and the World Relays in the Bahamas.

Matthias Schlitte (armwrestling, VfL Wolfsburg e. V.) took bronze at the Armwrestling World Championships in Greece and won the International Over the Top. He took fifth place at the European Championships in Poland.

The first women's team of VfL Wolfsburg Fußball GmbH put another exclamation mark on its success story with its eleventh DFB Cup win in 2024 - the tenth in a row.

Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann emphasized: "Our award winners this year have shown in an impressive way what is possible with passion, perseverance and discipline. They have set sporting standards and represent our city on the national and international stage."

Numerous other athletes were also honored for their special achievements at all levels. Two athletes were awarded the sports badge in gold for the 65th time - a powerful symbol of lifelong sporting activity.

Last but not least, the commitment that often works in the background was also honored: coaches, supervisors, families and volunteers - they all contribute to the fact that sport is alive in Wolfsburg. "Behind every medal and every title, there are also coaches, support staff, families and volunteers who often work in the background. Tonight is not only a recognition of top sporting achievements, but also a thank you to everyone who makes sport in Wolfsburg possible," Weilmann continued.

The vote for Sportswoman, Sportsman and Team of the Year took place at the beginning of 2025 on our participation portal mein.wolfsburg.de. 3,018 citizens took part.

We would like to say thank you and congratulate all the winners - you are the driving force and the face of our sporty city.
