Economically strong and fit for the future
City of Wolfsburg and Volkswagen commission Wolfsburg 2035 location concept

"Wolfsburg is at its strongest when we all work together. That was precisely our recipe for success at the end of the 1990s. Together with Volkswagen, we were able to create thousands of new jobs and many of today's city-defining milestones in urban development. This is exactly the kind of impetus we need again to make Wolfsburg more resilient as a business location in the long term. It is therefore important to focus on growth sectors that match the strengths and expertise of the local and regional economy and would therefore complement the location profitably," explains Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann.
"Volkswagen and the city of Wolfsburg are closely linked. Wolfsburg is and will remain the headquarters of the Volkswagen Group and plays a central role in the future development of the location. Together with the city, we are working on a location concept that will further strengthen Wolfsburg. As strategic partners, we are focusing on innovation and sustainable growth in order to future-proof Wolfsburg as a business location both nationally and internationally. Wolfsburg's development into one of the most sustainable cities in Germany is impressive proof of this," explains Gunnar Kilian, Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG, Human Resources and Brand Group Trucks.
"With innovation, partnership and a clear focus, we are creating the basis for an economically resilient and at the same time future-oriented Wolfsburg. Our strength lies in the close cooperation between business, science, the city and society. We want to tap into new value creation potential and secure Wolfsburg's long-term competitiveness - as Wolfsburg AG, we want to develop future prospects together," emphasizes Thomas Krause, CEO of Wolfsburg AG.
The timetable is ambitious. The location concept should be ready by the beginning of 2026. This will be followed by a strategic mission statement process that will broaden the perspective - beyond the topics of economic development. This will also include a broad participation process involving citizens, politicians and other important stakeholders in order to jointly develop strategic goals for the future of the city of Wolfsburg.
At the beginning of 2025, we published an economic agenda for Wolfsburg in the form of the 10-point plan. Two key building blocks have already been initiated with the future concept for science - which is also currently undergoing the political participation process - and the Wolfsburg 2035 location concept. The location concept was also on the agenda of the Strategy Committee. More information can be found here.
