Sufficient doctors in Wolfsburg
Important topic for the future: How the city is tackling the shortage of doctors

"Good medical care is the basis for quality of life, safety and confidence in the place where you live. Our goal is clear: we want to create excellent conditions for doctors in Wolfsburg and thus maintain an important cornerstone for a home worth living in for all generations. To this end, we will pool our efforts even more and shape this future with our key partners," explains Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann.
In a broad alliance between the administration, Wolfsburg Wirtschaft und Marketing GmbH (WMG), investors and the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians of Lower Saxony (KVN), the medical care of Wolfsburg and its citizens is to be ensured.
Reasons of age: Many Wolfsburg surgeries are facing closure
"As a municipality, we have to offer future-oriented, innovative and needs-based solutions. Trust, reliability and a long-term perspective play a key role in this. That is why we are intensifying our commitment not only in the financial area, but above all in the specific consideration of wishes and needs," adds Andreas Bauer, Head of the Health Department.
There are two starting points for the current situation: Firstly, many Wolfsburg GP practices are facing closure due to age and secondly, the job profile of young doctors has changed. Today, the compatibility of family and career is more important - and thus an employment relationship more interesting - than having one's own practice. At the same time, however, the need for treatment is increasing due to an ageing population. For example, the doctor supply rate in Wolfsburg is currently 90.5 percent. In a worst-case scenario, however, it would be possible for the supply to fall to 75 percent.
Funding extended - support of up to 150,000 euros
We have been actively promoting the establishment of doctors in the city since 2013. Both in the search for suitable premises and financially with up to 50,000 euros. In 2025, we have once again significantly expanded this support. Existing practices can now also receive funding - up to 150,000 euros if they invest in innovative approaches. Students also receive support, for example when medical students complete their mandatory internship in Wolfsburg. Scholarships and mentoring programs are also offered to students at the medical campus.
A special focus was also placed on this recently at the symposium Outpatient contract medical care in Wolfsburg - taking stock. The meeting of participating institutions and associations in combination with impulses from administration and medicine underlined key points as important findings: the need for a further training network, a network between doctors and a long-term strategy for the branches in Wolfsburg. The question of a medical practice of the future and bundling, delegation and digitalization play a central role here.
