More protection against heat and heavy rain
Federal government funds climate adaptation with 221,000 euros until 2029
We are consistently continuing our climate adaptation: we will receive around 221,000 euros from the federal government for the years 2026 to 2029. This will enable us to continue implementing specific measures to combat heat, heavy rainfall and other consequences of climate change - for a better quality of life in Wolfsburg.

We completed our integrated climate adaptation concept last year. Now comes the next step: with the approved follow-up funding from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Protection, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, we are securing funding from March 1, 2026 to February 28, 2029.
22 concrete measures
The basis for this is a comprehensive analysis of our urban climate and the risks posed by climate change. We have identified particularly sensitive areas - for example heat stress in densely built-up districts, heavy rainfall events, the protection of green spaces and health effects.
"The climate adaptation concept is based on a comprehensive analysis of the urban climate and a climate risk analysis. Particularly affected areas of action were identified, including heat prevention, heavy rainfall, urban greenery, health and climate-resilient infrastructure. A total of 22 key measures were defined to strategically promote climate adaptation in Wolfsburg across all departments," emphasizes Kai-Uwe Hirschheide, First City Councillor and City Planning Councillor.
These 22 measures form our binding work plan for the coming years - from more shade and greenery to better handling of rainwater and adapted planning for new construction projects.
Permanently anchoring climate adaptation
A central component is climate adaptation management, which we set up with the first funding and are now continuing.
The team coordinates the implementation of measures, supports administration and politics and informs and involves the public. The aim is to take climate adaptation into account in all important planning - for example in construction projects, streetscapes and green spaces.
At the same time, we regularly review the effectiveness of the measures. What works well will be continued. We make adjustments where necessary.
Our goal is clear: Wolfsburg should remain liveable even with rising temperatures and more frequent heavy rainfall events.
