Naming in marriage

On May 1, 2025, the law amending the law on married names and birth names and private international law came into force. This opens up a wide range of new options for the use of names in marriage.

On the day of the marriage - or later during the marriage - spouses can make a declaration on the use of their married name (e.g. married name).

Civil partners also have the option of submitting a name declaration at a later date during an existing civil partnership.

After the dissolution of a marriage or civil partnership, it is also possible to change the family name.

Without submitting a name declaration, spouses continue to use the name they had at the time of marriage.
