If you have purchased a registered vehicle with Wolfsburg license plates, you must immediately apply to the vehicle registration authority for a transfer to your name as the new owner.
It is possible to assign a license plate of your choice to the vehicle for a fee - provided that the license plate is free and available. Information on availability, as well as the possible license plate combinations, can be found on the Internet at Wunschkennzeichen - Online.
Do not forget:
Since 01 March 2007, for a private person the vehicle can only be registered in the district of the main residence.
Since 01.10.2019, it is possible for private individuals to perform this service online. Please note that different requirements apply here.
- Main residence in Wolfsburg
A secondary residence (second home) in Wolfsburg is not sufficient. If the vehicle is registered to a company or association, the company or association must have a registered office or branch in Wolfsburg.
- Identity card or passport with registration certificate (or officially certified copy)
- Vehicle registration document/registration certificate Part I
- Proof of valid motor vehicle liability insurance via the eVB procedure with receipt of a seven-digit electronic insurance confirmation number (eVB)
- Proof of a valid main inspection in accordance with § 29 StVZO (German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations)
- HU test report: the submission of the test report on the last main inspection is only required if the due date of the next HU cannot be derived from the vehicle registration certificate or the registration certificate part I.
- Vehicle registration certificate / registration certificate part II / operating permit (EC certificate of conformity or full expert opinion for vehicles not subject to registration)
- SEPA direct debit mandate for collection of vehicle tax
- Additional license plates
If applicable, additionally required at the time of application:
by authorized person/representative*:
- issued power of attorney (see below for form) including personal document of the person issuing the power of attorney and of the authorized representative
- Current excerpt from the commercial register, current business registration, power of attorney of the managing director or authorized signatory or personal appearance of the managing director/authorized signatory and their identity card/passport.
- Excerpt from the register of associations; identity card or passport and power of attorney of the designated representative(s).
- Complete overview of the shareholders (usually shareholders' agreement).
- Power of attorney and declaration of the person to whom the admission is to be made (confirmed by signature of all partners) as well as the identity card / passport of the partner to whom the admission is to be made.
For freelancers:
- Proof of membership of a chamber (e.g. medical association, chamber of notaries, chamber of veterinary surgeons, etc.) or
- Certificate of the tax office
Fees will be charged in accordance with the German Fee Regulations for Road Traffic Measures (GebOSt) from an amount of 19.90 euros. The specific fee amount can only be determined on site based on the submission of the complete documents.
Additional costs for the creation of license plates are not included and will not be charged by the vehicle registration authority.
If there are any fee arrears, these must be paid on the day of registration in accordance with the Motor Vehicle Registration Requirements Act, otherwise registration of the vehicle will be refused.
If there are tax arrears, these must be paid at the relevant main customs office. Registration can only be carried out after this.
