Treatment

This page provides information on medical and psychotherapeutic treatment services for people with mental illnesses. The help is divided into outpatient, day-care and inpatient services. Outpatient services include GPs, psychiatrists and psychotherapists in private practice as well as outreach psychiatric home care and occupational therapy. Partial inpatient services include, for example, the day clinic. Inpatient treatment takes place in clinics.

Registered doctors and psychological psychotherapists

GPs are often the first point of contact for people with mental stress and mental illness, referring them to other treatment options if necessary. If there is a need for a differentiated diagnosis and specific treatment, treatment by a registered specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy is recommended.

Psychotherapy is a collective term for a range of conversational and behavioral methods that are used to treat mental disorders. If you would like to take advantage of outpatient psychotherapy, you must contact a registered psychological psychotherapist or a medical psychotherapist.

Psychiatric outpatient clinic (PIA)

The psychiatric outpatient clinic focuses on providing outpatient support for people with chronic mental illnesses who require continuous and hospital-based treatment due to the nature, severity and duration of their illness. The support includes medical help and psychosocial care services, such as group discussions and counselling, which help to cope with everyday life and stabilize the patient. The aim is to avoid hospital stays, shorten treatment times and promote social integration.

Day clinic Wolfsburg

Psychiatric day clinics are attached to psychiatric clinics. They form a bridge between inpatient and outpatient treatment. The treatment offered is similar to that offered on hospital wards. In the day clinic, mentally ill people are treated five days a week during the day, while they stay at home at night and at weekends. A visit to a day clinic is often recommended following an inpatient stay. It is also possible to be admitted to the day clinic in order to avoid a stay in hospital.

Psychiatric hospitals

In Germany, there are specialist hospitals for psychiatry and psychotherapy as well as general hospitals that have a psychiatric department. Psychiatric hospital treatment includes individual therapy sessions, group therapy, counseling and support in applying for further help, drug treatment and art, music, movement or occupational therapy. The clinics have multi-professional teams with specialist therapists for the respective services. Advice for relatives is also one of their tasks. The costs of treatment are covered by health insurance.

Occupational therapy

Outpatient occupational therapy is provided by registered occupational therapists. The aim of occupational therapy is to help people participate in everyday activities. It is about (re)gaining, promoting and maintaining the ability to act in everyday life, in self-care, at work and in leisure activities. The treatment improves motor skills, coordination, perception and concentration. Doctors in private practice can prescribe occupational therapy to improve your ability to act in various areas of life.
