Expansion of the school landscape
School development planning measures presented to the school committee

Expansion of the school landscape
"Wolfsburg is growing - and with it the responsibility to ensure good framework conditions in the education sector. With our school development planning, we are focusing on long-term, sustainable and at the same time adaptable solutions that reflect real needs and do justice to the development of our city," emphasizes Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann.
We are meeting the increasing demand for school places with a forward-looking development of the school landscape. The aim is to continue to provide all children with a high-quality education close to home. The focus here is not just on short-term reactions, but on strategically intelligent planning.
"By updating school development planning, we are responding to the growing number of pupils and creating a reliable basis for future decisions. The aim is to maintain capacities in a resource-oriented manner, taking into account pupil numbers and existing personnel capacities. In doing so, we act with a high degree of sensitivity and flexibility, in conjunction with the political bodies, in order to master the peaks of the coming years well," says Iris Bothe, Head of Education.
Flexible solutions for dynamic development
School development planning is based on current forecasts for pupil numbers, which will initially continue to rise, but will also fall again in the medium term and remain at a high level. We are therefore consciously focusing on flexible and transitional solutions that reflect actual demand without creating long-term structural overcapacity.
In many cases, temporary classes, modular buildings or the extended use of existing buildings are used. Extensions are only planned where absolutely necessary. In this way, we remain capable of acting - with a system that responds to growth, but can also be sensibly scaled back if pupil numbers change.
Planned measures at a glance
Primary sector:
- Expansion of existing elementary school (e.g. Wohltberg, Bunte GS in Detmerode) to include additional classes or temporary classes.
- Temporary solutions through modular buildings at locations with acute space bottlenecks (e.g. Käferschule, Heidgarten).
- New building projects, such as the primary level of the Leonardo da Vinci IGS, are being driven forward.
Secondary level:
- Grammar schools: expansion by up to four additional classes, starting at Rats- and Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium - partly by using existing buildings (former Realschulen).
- Comprehensive schools: Construction of the sixth train at the Leonardo da Vinci IGS from 2025/26.
- Secondary and intermediate schools: Additional classes as required within the existing space available.
- Westhagen school center: Examination of new branches for the Wolfsburg secondary school and the Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium to relieve the existing buildings.
