Start of construction on the Alternative Green Route

"The Alternative Green Route is one of our most important transport infrastructure projects," emphasizes Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann. "We are creating fast, direct access to our city center with sustainable forms of mobility. At the same time, we are relieving our roads of traffic and reconnecting city districts."
"After intensive planning, we are now entering the project phase in which we are implementing concrete steps," adds Kai-Uwe Hirschheide, First City Councillor and City Planning Councillor. "I am convinced that AGR is not only making an important contribution to sustainable mobility, but is also further improving the quality of local public transport."
Construction process
The construction process is divided into five stages: securing the construction site, earthworks, road construction, construction of the footpaths and cycle paths as well as the lighting systems. Restrictions for car traffic are not to be expected. Only at the Sandkrugstraße entrance may there be temporary obstructions due to construction traffic. There may be disruptions for pedestrians and cyclists due to the construction work. For this reason, the footpaths and cycle paths between the districts will also have to be closed. A detour via Sandkrugstraße will be set up to maintain the connection between the two residential areas.
Costs for the construction work
The costs for the construction project amount to 3.7 million euros, whereby the city was able to obtain funding of 1.9 million euros. The northern section of the AGR is expected to be completed in spring 2026. Meanwhile, the date for the start of construction on the South 1 section (between Steimker Gärten and the K 5 / K 111 junction; along Nordsteimker Straße) has also been set. Work is due to start here in August. As soon as further details are available, the administration will provide the usual information.
