For more road safety

K46/Hubertusstraße junction to get traffic lights

The city council has submitted a proposal for the conversion of the K46/Hubertusstraße junction in Wolfsburg's Nordstadt district. The plan is to equip the junction with a traffic light system (colloquially known as a traffic light) and to extend the existing right-turn lane. The aim is to significantly increase road safety and improve traffic flow at the same time. The proposal is now being discussed politically.

The junction is considered an accident blackspot and has been under observation by the accident commission for some time. The planned reconstruction is intended to replace the immediate measures taken so far - such as reducing the speed limit to 50 km/h - and to permanently alleviate the situation.

"The reconstruction is an important step towards increasing road safety - especially with regard to the accidents at this point," says Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann. "With this proposal, we are creating a viable solution that both addresses the recommendations of the accident commission and improves the efficiency of the junction."

City planning officer Kai-Uwe Hirschheide and city councillor Andreas Bauer also emphasize: "Traffic simulations show that the planned traffic light system in combination with the extended turning lane can significantly stabilize the traffic flow - especially at peak times. At the same time, the crossing will also be safer for pedestrians and cyclists."

The traffic light system is to be connected to the city's traffic computer in order to be able to react quickly to disruptions and flexibly adjust the signal control if necessary. Construction is scheduled to start in spring 2026. Preparatory measures such as laying cables and the necessary tree felling will begin in advance.

The proposal will now be discussed in the relevant committees. The final decision on implementation will be made by Wolfsburg City Council on June 18.
