Libraries are back in the districts

Fallersleben, Nordstadt, Vorsfelde and Detmerode reopen on August 21

Finally back to browsing, browsing and meeting: our district libraries are opening their doors again. From August 21, life will return to the branches in Fallersleben, Nordstadt, Vorsfelde and Detmerode. The reason for the temporary closure was a staff shortage in August 2023. Since then, we have been working together with the local councils and the city library to find a good solution for the restart. Now the time has come!

The decision was made by the local councils: In Vorsfelde, Fallersleben and Nordstadt, dedicated volunteers will take over operations in future. In Detmerode, the library will remain full-time. Both models were confirmed by the city council in June 2024.

Since February 2025, a new project position has been coordinating the volunteer work - the full-time position for Detmerode has also been filled since July. At the same time, the locations have been technically modernized and the media stocks updated.

Strong cooperation for strong districts

"The district libraries are an important part of life in our districts. They strengthen community life, offer space for encounters and enrich social interaction. That is why we have been working hard to find a solution to reopen them," says Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann. "The fact that we can now reopen them is thanks to the impressive efforts of many volunteers. This commitment shows how strong cohesion is in Wolfsburg and how much people care about life in their districts."

We were overwhelmed by the call for committed citizens in March 2025: A team of around 20 volunteers was recruited for each library. They have all received intensive training and are ready to get started.

Education close to home

"Libraries are important learning and meeting spaces," emphasizes Iris Bothe, Head of Youth, Education, Integration and Social Affairs. "They offer children and young people in particular access to knowledge, digital media and creative activities. With the reopening of the district libraries, we are creating opportunities for education and further training close to home - open to all generations."

The new opening hours from August 21:

  • Fallersleben: Thursdays 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Nordstadt: Thursdays 10 am to 12:30 pm and 3 pm to 5:30 pm
  • Vorsfelde: Thursdays 10 am to 4:30 pm
  • Detmerode: Thursdays 1 to 5 p.m.

Come along, discover new media, take advantage of the offers and be part of the lively district life!
