Order of Merit for Hans-Joachim Throl

Mayor emphasized voluntary commitment

Federal President Frank Walter Steinmeier has awarded Dr. Hans-Joachim Throl, Honorary Citizen of the City of Wolfsburg, the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. The award was presented by Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann in the presence of representatives from politics and administration as well as friends in the Council Chamber in the Town Hall.

"Volunteering is an indispensable part of our society. With his many years of service, Dr. Hans-Joachim Throl has helped to take responsibility for others and strengthen the community. Today, I am presenting him with the Cross of Merit on Ribbon for this commitment," said Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann in his laudatory speech.

In Seebüll, a district of Neukirchen in the Schleswig-Holstein district of Nordfriesland, Dr. Hans-Joachim Throl has been involved with the Seebüll Ada and Emil Nolde Foundation for many years. He has made it his duty to preserve the extensive estate of probably the most famous and important artist of the 20th century for posterity and to communicate it worldwide.

Throl was actively involved in the foundation's work and played a key role in its reorganization. He was involved in the establishment of the Friends of the Nolde Foundation Seebüll and was its deputy chairman for the first few years. He has been a member of the Board of Trustees since 2010 and has been Chairman since 2013.

Nolde Collection

The richness of the Nolde Collection consists of paintings, watercolors, drawings, graphic and craft works. Emil Nolde was one of the leading painters of Expressionism. He is one of the great watercolorists of 20th century art and is known for his expressive use of color.

Dr. Hans-Joachim Throl is also known in Wolfsburg for his political and artistic commitment. He was a voting member of the Art Advisory Board and its chairman from 2002 to 2023. His duties included helping to purchase works of art for the city's art collection. Dr. Throl also acted as an advisor to the city on issues relating to art in the city. In April 2018, he was awarded honorary citizenship for his many years of outstanding work for the benefit of the citizens of our city.
