A "green oasis" in the city center
Ideas for the redesign of Kleistpark are available
"We are transforming Kleistpark into a lively green oasis - a place where all generations enjoy meeting and spending time. I think it is particularly important that a broad participation process has incorporated key ideas from citizens into the concept, enabling us to create a place that creates identity, offers recreation and entertainment and brings people together," explains Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann.
Strengthen existing offers - increase quality of stay
The biggest change will be to the public space. Green spaces will be expanded and supplemented, the network of paths completely overhauled, the lighting improved and a football pitch built. The redesign of Kleistpark is also based on a new rainwater concept using the sponge city principle. This means that more areas will be unsealed to create infiltration areas - which in turn should also solve the flooding problem in the parking lot in front of the "Haus der Jugend".
"Essentially, we are addressing four key points: We are increasing the attractiveness of the institutions on site, we are upgrading the park in terms of urban development, we are increasing the sense of security and we are designing a place to spend time with added ecological value and a high level of climate resilience," adds Kai-Uwe Hirschheide, First City Councillor and City Planning Officer.
Focus on the redesign of the eastern entrance area
We are paying particular attention to the urban upgrading of the "Hallenbad" entrance area - i.e. the eastern entrance coming from Kaufhof. This also includes the barrier-free and climate-friendly conversion of the parking lot. The cultural center's beer garden will also be given a new look as part of this project. It is to be made more open and thus more strongly integrated as part of the Kleistpark. In addition, the conditions will be created for the beer garden to be used by the indoor pool as well as leased to third parties.
Sections to be completed in 2028
We expect the redesign of Kleistpark to cost around 5.1 million euros - of which around two million euros are eligible for funding. The Green Oasis Inner City - Kleistpark is part of the Resilient Inner Cities funding program. Our aim is to complete parts of the redesign by mid-2028.
