Children active as little climate protectors

Children from the Bären group at the Bonhoeffer daycare center and the DRK daycare center in Fallersleben Ost took part in the Little Climate Protectors on the Move campaign. During the campaign period, the girls and boys collected symbolic green Footprints for climate protection for every environmentally friendly journey they made on foot, by scooter or public transport. Children also collected Green Footprints for the sustainable use of energy at the daycare center and at home or for the use of regional food.

In the Bären group at the Bonhoeffer daycare center, the campaign focused on the topic of plastic. "Exciting experiments were carried out on this topic," nursery teacher Christina Noussi told the Environmental Agency. "For example, plastic and apple peelings were buried in the ground. After two weeks, these were dug up again and the children discovered that the apple peelings had rotted and the plastic had not," explained Noussi. The parents were also involved at home by completing small tasks in a collection booklet together with the children. This year's lantern festival also focused on everyday materials. The lanterns were not made from traditional materials, but from everyday materials such as plastic and drinks bottles.

In total, the Wolfsburg children collected 650 Children's Footprints for climate protection. In recognition of their achievements, the two daycare centers received certificates and vouchers from the city of Wolfsburg. Children's Footprints is a campaign of the Climate Alliance city network. The total number of Green Footprints collected across Europe was presented by the Climate Alliance at the UN Climate Change Conference in Brazil as a contribution by European children to global climate protection.
