Wolfsburg remains attractive - and continues to grow
Population reaches new high since reunification

One important reason for this is that many people are consciously choosing Wolfsburg as a place to live and work. New residential areas in particular, such as Steimker Gärten, continue to attract many new residents.
"The current figures show that Wolfsburg is continuing to grow despite demographic and economic challenges. The decisive factors here are the continuing high migration gains and the positive development in individual districts - Steimker Gärten in particular is a major driver of immigration. This confirms that we are on the right track with our targeted investment in housing construction, infrastructure and quality of life in order to further strengthen Wolfsburg as an attractive place to live and work," says Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann.
More people moving in, fewer people moving out
In 2025, 6,560 new people moved to Wolfsburg - almost as many as in the previous year. At the same time, significantly fewer people left the city: With 5,750 people moving out, the second-lowest figure in the past ten years was achieved. All in all, this results in a migration gain of 810 people. The fact that migration patterns between Wolfsburg and the surrounding area have changed noticeably since 2022 has had a particularly positive effect.
Decline in birth rate is offset
As in many cities, the trend of falling birth rates is also continuing in Wolfsburg. In 2025, 1,015 children were born, while 1,599 people died. This results in a birth deficit of -584 people. However, we were able to more than compensate for this decline thanks to the high level of immigration: Overall, the population increased by 276 people compared to the previous year.
Districts develop differently
Wolfsburg is not growing at the same rate everywhere. The largest increases were in the city center with 300 more inhabitants and in Steimker Gärten with 155 more inhabitants. New housing construction is particularly noticeable here. In other parts of the city and districts, the development is different.
