School transportation ensured

Coach handed over to solidarity partner city Nischyn

As part of its solidarity partnership with the Ukrainian city of Nischyn, the city of Wolfsburg has now handed over a coach to ensure school transportation in the partner community. The bus will enable children and young people from the surrounding communities to travel to school regularly again and take part in lessons and sports activities.

"The ongoing support of our Ukrainian solidarity partner cities is a matter of course for Wolfsburg. By handing over the coach, we are helping to ensure that children and young people in Nizhyn have access to education even under difficult conditions," emphasizes Dennis Weilmann, Lord Mayor of the City of Wolfsburg.

The procurement of the bus was financed by the fund for the procurement of material goods for municipal services of Engagement Global with its Service Agency Communities in One World (SKEW) on behalf of and with funds from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. Due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, many vehicles are used for military purposes, which means that there is a lack of suitable transportation options for pupils in Nizhyn. Thanks to the new bus, it can now be ensured that more children can attend school regularly.

The handover of the bus is part of the City of Wolfsburg's support for the two Ukrainian solidarity partner cities of Nizhyn and Shovkva. The city will continue to support its partner community and initiate sustainable projects to improve local living conditions. Together with the Wolfsburg District Association of the German Red Cross (DRK), the city will continue to appeal for donations.

As recently as December, a sum of 40,000 euros was donated to support projects to care for senior citizens and people in need of care in Nischyn. The provision and coordination is being carried out in cooperation with the German Red Cross (DRK) in Berlin and the Ukrainian Red Cross. Thanks to the experience of the aid organizations and their exchange, the donations are used efficiently.

Further information on the donation account can be found on the city's website at www.wolfsburg.de/rathaus/spenden_fuer_ukraine
