Facing up to your own past

Podcast on the topic of forced labor

On July 15, our subsidiary NEULAND laid a wreath at the grave of forced laborer Nadja Safonowa. Safonova was one of at least 15 women who had to perform forced labor in NEULAND's own laundries during the Second World War. In August 1943, at the age of 18, she was deported from her home in the Crimea to the "city of the KdF wagon". There she fell ill with severe kidney inflammation the following winter, no doubt also due to the inadequate nutrition and the inhumane accommodation in the "Ostlager". She succumbed to the consequences of her illness on January 26, 1944.

Since January 1, 2025, NEULAND has been working on its company history in collaboration with the IZS. The main focus is on the company's own Nazi past, which was founded in 1938 as Neuland, Gemeinnützige Wohnungs- und Siedlungsgesellschaft der Deutschen Arbeitsfront for the construction of the National Socialist "model housing estate". NEULAND is thus taking responsibility for its past. It is important to it to proceed in a transparent and critical manner. The memory of the exploited victims of the founding years is to become part of the corporate culture.

The current, third podcast episode on the topic of "Forced labor at NEULAND during the war years" will be released at the same time as the wreath-laying ceremony. The podcast "NEULAND. History and Responsibility" is available free of charge on Spotify.
