Poststrasse shows a new face
Central city center axis ceremonially opened - green, modern and with more space

Poststrasse has been redesigned in two construction phases since 2016. Now the eastern section is also complete - from Robert-Koch-Platz to Sara-Frenkel-Platz. The project will further enhance the craftsmen's quarter. What was particularly important to us was more space for people, a better quality of life and a climate-adapted design with heat-resistant plants.
"The new Poststrasse is not only a functional traffic area, but also an attractive urban space in the middle of the city center - with quality of stay, green islands and modern design. It forms the connecting element between the neighbourhood, the university and the city centre," emphasizes Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann."The fact that we were able to successfully complete this project is also a sign of the perseverance with which we are developing our city center together."
Contribution to the climate and urban design
City planning officer Kai-Uwe Hirschheide also emphasizes the impact of the redesign: "With the renewal of the eastern section of Poststrasse, we have consistently continued the qualitative upgrading of the craftsmen's quarter. The wide sidewalks, new planting beds and tree locations not only ensure a pleasant cityscape, but also contribute to a climate-adapted public space."
One highlight is the newly created space at the intersection of Siegfried-Ehlers-Straße and Robert-Koch-Platz - in conjunction with the new Ostfalia University canteen, a completely new urban space has been created here.
Financing and subsidies
The construction costs for the second phase amounted to around 1.5 million euros. Two thirds of this came from the federal and state government's Growth and Sustainable Renewal funding program. The measure thus complements other projects in the Handwerkerviertel - including Robert-Koch-Platz, Schachtweg Nord and many smaller projects.
The new Ostfalia campus with the Faculty of Healthcare and the renovated former public order office also demonstrate this: When many building blocks interlock, a strong whole is created for our city center.
