Wolfsburg remains a city of the future
Future Atlas 2025: 6th place for Wolfsburg - strong in innovation and labor market

The new Future Atlas clearly shows that we are on a strong course. Out of 400 cities and districts in Germany, Wolfsburg takes 6th place in the overall ranking - a result to be proud of. In the areas of competition & innovation (2nd place) and labor market (4th place), we are even among the leaders.
"Wolfsburg is and will remain a location of the future - this is impressively demonstrated by the excellent ranking in the current Future Atlas," explains Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann. "Especially in economically challenging times, it shows how sustainable our structures are. This ranking is both a confirmation and a mandate for us: with the future concept for science, our economic agenda and the Wolfsburg 2035 location concept, we are targeting where we have the greatest leverage for growth and transformation - with strong partners, clear concepts and the ambition to further expand our strengths."
Actively shaping the future
Despite the positive overall result, the Atlas also shows that we must not rest on our laurels. In the dynamics ranking - which evaluates development over time - we have slipped from 39th to 76th place. This is a clear signal for us to work even more actively on our resilience and innovative strength.
That is why we are moving forward with a clear agenda: at the beginning of 2025, we will present a 10-point plan for the economy. Among other things, we are focusing on more innovation promotion, better digital processes and tailor-made commercial spaces - all in close cooperation with local businesses. SMEs and start-ups in particular should benefit from this.
Strong partner for transformation
A central project is the Wolfsburg 2035 location concept developed jointly with Volkswagen. The aim is to make our regional economy fit for the future - and to open up new sectors and value chains in the process. The concept is being developed with the involvement of Wolfsburg AG and other partners. It should be available by 2026 and then transformed into a strategic model.
More science for a better future
We are also setting new standards in the area of research and education: with the science concept for the future, we are creating a framework for action that links urban development, education and research for the first time. Together with Ostfalia University, TU Braunschweig, the Wolfsburg Medical Campus, the Open Hybrid LabFactory, the Programming School 42 Wolfsburg and other partners, we are building a strong innovation landscape. In this way, we want to further raise Wolfsburg's profile as a science location - and secure the skilled workers and technologies of the future.
