Wolfsburg welcomes new first-graders

Around 1,480 children will start school in summer 2025

For many families, starting school marks the beginning of a whole new chapter. We are expecting around 1,480 new first-graders in Wolfsburg for the 2025/26 school year - slightly more than in the previous year.

"Starting school is an important milestone - for every child, but also for the city society. In Wolfsburg, we are doing everything we can to ensure that our youngest children have a good and safe start to school life. I would like to thank everyone involved - from the educational teams to the school administration," says Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann.

There are currently 1,367 children enrolled at municipal schools. In addition, there are around 40 enrolments at special schools and around 73 children at the Freie Waldorfschule and the Neue Schule. The Protestant Waldschule Eichelkamp is also responding to increasing demand: it is planning an additional first class.

Equal opportunities for all

We are committed to ensuring that all children - regardless of their background or need for support - have the best possible starting conditions. "Starting school marks the beginning of a new chapter in life - for each child individually and for us as a city community collectively. Our educational policy goal is to ensure that all children in Wolfsburg have the best possible starting opportunities, regardless of their background or need for support. To achieve this, we are investing in a diverse school landscape and good learning conditions - from the first day of nursery school to the start of secondary school," explains Iris Bothe, Head of Education.

There are a total of 23 primary schools in Wolfsburg - including 18 elementary school at 26 locations and three primary levels at comprehensive schools. One special feature: more and more parents are taking advantage of the flexible school enrolment date for children who turn six in the summer. This means that for some, the start of school will be postponed until 2026.

"The fact that we are able to organize the transition from nursery to school well for over 1,400 children is the result of close cooperation - in the schools, in the administration and with politicians," says Christoph Andacht, Head of the School Division.

The final enrolment figures will be available after August 28, 2025, when the official school statistics of the state of Lower Saxony will be published.
