Fixed security installations planned for Porschestrasse

We want to permanently protect the city center and steer traffic more clearly

Porschestraße in the city center is to be made safer and easier to use. We are planning to permanently secure central access points to the pedestrian zone with fixed and retractable bollards. This will enable us to better protect the public space from unauthorized vehicle traffic, provide logistical support for events - and also improve the quality of life in the heart of the city.

"We are increasing safety in public spaces and at the same time creating clear traffic structures. The city centre remains an attractive place - for trade, for events and for everyone who likes to be out and about here," emphasizes Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann.

The planned installations consist of a combination of retractable and fixed bollards. They will be complemented by benches, planters and other elements. "It is also important to us that the new installations blend in well with the cityscape. With this measure, we are responding to comments from the public and making Porschestraße future-proof," adds city planning officer Kai-Uwe Hirschheide.

Controlled access still possible

The measure affects the access roads from Kleiststraße, Rothenfelder Straße, Kolpingstraße Nord, Kaufhofpassage, Maximilian-Kolbe-Weg and Pestalozziallee, among others. The latter will only be implemented after the BraWoArkaden has been built.

Thanks to modern control technology, emergency services, delivery traffic and other authorized persons remain flexible: the retractable bollards can be controlled in a targeted manner - so safety and functionality are not mutually exclusive. Implementation is planned in two construction phases from 2026. The first partial commissioning is scheduled for the 2026 Christmas market.

A benefit for everyone who likes to get out and about in the city

The total cost of the project is around 938,000 euros. Around 40 percent - around EUR 375,200 - can be covered by the Resilient City Centers funding programme of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The City of Wolfsburg's own contribution amounts to around 562,800 euros. The planning is being carried out in close coordination with the security authorities.
