Driving license classes

As of January 01, 1999, there are now 16 different driving license classes instead of the previous seven. Here you will find them all divided alphabetically.

  • Class A

    Motorcycles

    • (also with sidecar): Engine capacity of more than 50 cm³ or with a maximum speed determined by the design of more than 45 km/h
    • three-wheeled motor vehicles: power of more than 15 kW and
    • three-wheeledmotor vehicles with symmetrically arranged wheels: Engine displacement of more than 50 cm³ in the case of internal combustion engines or with a maximum design speed of more than 45 km/h and a power of more than 15 kW

  • Class A1

    Motorcycles

    • (also with sidecar): Displacement of up to 125 cm³, engine power of not more than 11 kW, where the ratio of power to weight does not exceed 0.1 kW/kg
    • Three-wheeled motor vehicles with symmetrically arranged wheels: Displacement of more than 50 cm³ for internal combustion engines or a maximum design speed of more than 45 km/h and a power output of up to 15 kW

  • Class A2

    Motorcycles (also with sidecar)

    • Motor power of not more than 35 kW, where the ratio of power to weight does not exceed 0.2 kW/kg

  • Class AM

    Two-wheeled mopeds (also with sidecar)

    (mopeds): maximum design speed of not more than 45 km/h, electric drive engine or internal combustion engine with a cubic capacity of not more than 50 cm³ or max. continuous rated power of up to 4 kW in the case of electric motors (also applies to bicycles with auxiliary motor with these requirements)

    Three-wheeled mopeds and four-wheeled light vehicles

    maximum design speed of no more than 45 km/h and engine displacement of no more than 50 cm³ for positive-ignition engines, max. net power of no more than 4 kW for other internal combustion engines or max. rated power of no more than 4 kW for electric motors. - in the case of light four-wheeled vehicles, the unladen mass must not exceed 350 kg. (excluding the mass of the batteries in the case of electric vehicles).

  • Class B

    Motor vehicles

    (except classes AM, A1, A2 and A): maximum permissible mass not exceeding 3500 kg, for the carriage of not more than eight persons (excluding the driver). (also with trailer with maximum permissible mass not exceeding 750 kg or with trailer over 750 kg maximum permissible mass, provided that 3500 kg maximum permissible mass of the combination is not exceeded).

  • Class B with key number 96

    Vehicle combination consisting of a motor vehicle of category B and a trailer with a maximum permissible mass exceeding 750 kg, provided that the maximum permissible mass of the vehicle combination exceeds 3,500 kg but does not exceed 4,250 kg.

  • Class BE

    Class B towing vehicle in combination with a trailer/semitrailer. (maximum permissible mass of the trailer of not more than 3500 kg).

  • Class C

    Motor vehicles (except for categories AM, A1, A2, A) with maximum permissible mass exceeding 3500 kg, transporting not more than eight persons (except the driver) (also with trailers with maximum permissible mass not exceeding 750 kg)

  • Class C1

    Motor vehicles (except categories AM, A1, A2 and A): with a maximum authorized mass of more than 3500 kg but not more than 7500 kg. Carriage of no more than eight persons (excluding the driver), (also with a trailer with a maximum authorized mass of no more than 750 kg)

  • Class C1E

    • Class C1 towing vehicle in combination with a trailer/semi-trailer, maximum permissible mass exceeding 750 kg, provided that the maximum permissible mass of the vehicle combination does not exceed 12,000 kg.
    • Class B towing vehicle and a trailer/semi-trailer, maximum permissible mass exceeding 3,500 kg, provided that the maximum permissible mass of the vehicle combination does not exceed 12,000 kg

  • Class CE

    Class C towing vehicle in combination with trailer/semitrailer (maximum permissible mass of more than 750 kg).

  • Class D

    Motor vehicles (except categories AM, A1, A2 and A) for the transportation of more than eight persons (except the driver) (also with a trailer with a maximum permissible mass of no more than 750 kg)

  • Class D1

    Motor vehicles (except classes AM, A1, A2, and A) designed to carry more than eight but not more than 16 persons (excluding the driver). Length of not more than 8 m. (also with trailer with a maximum permissible mass of not more than 750 kg).

  • Class D1E

    Class D1 towing vehicle in combination with trailer (maximum authorized mass of more than 750 kg)

  • Class EN

    Class D towing vehicle in combination with trailer (maximum permissible mass of more than 750 kg).

  • Class L

    • Tractors with a maximum design speed of no more than 40 km/h which are designed for agricultural or forestry purposes and are used for such purposes.
    • Combinations of these vehicles and trailers if they are driven at a speed of no more than 25 km/h.
    • Self-propelled machinery and feed mixers, forklift trucks and other industrial trucks, each with a maximum design speed of no more than 25 km/h and combinations of these vehicles and trailers.

  • Class T

    Tractors with a maximum design speed of not more than 60 km/h and self-propelled working machines or self-propelled fodder mixing machines with a maximum design speed of not more than 40 km/h, each of which is designed for use for agricultural or forestry purposes and is used for such purposes. (in each case also with trailers)

Modification of the validity of driving licenses according to section 24a of the German Driving License Ordinance (FeV)

(1) the validity of driving licenses issued as of 19.01.2013 shall be limited to 15 years

(2) driver's licenses issued before 19.01.2013 shall be exchanged by 19 January 2033
